TEXAS: Charter Schools Partner to Help End Dropout Crisis

winfreeLast week, elementary students from St. Anthony School in Dallas, TX donated school supplies to Winfree Academy Charter Schools in Richardson. The students were completing their service learning project, which is a lesson used to teach students about how serving others can have a major impact on their community.  The students were charged with identifying a negative cycle present in their community and researching how they could end that cycle.  The fifth-grade class chose to focus on High School Dropouts and how the community can come together to help these students graduate.

“After researching high school dropouts, we googled ‘drop out recovery schools’ and Winfree was the first school to come up”, said St. Anthony student Joshua F.

Winfree Academy Charter Schools is a non-traditional, public-high school of choice where students work at an individualized pace to make up credits and graduate with a state-accredited diploma. 92% of the students at Winfree Academy are “At-risk” of dropping out of high school.

The students at St. Anthony decided that they wanted to help out the school for their project by providing school supplies. They threw two consecutive “Hat Day” fundraisers to raise money for the project.  Almost $200 was raised.

“We made $50 on the first day and $143 on the second day”, says Joshua F.

The students then contacted Winfree Academy to see what supplies they needed and went shopping.  On Valentine’s Day, four students walked into Winfree Academy with bags full of school supplies in each hand.  Each 5th-grader introduced themselves and presented their donations to all the teachers and students. “We want to help you graduate”, said St. Anthony student Wade T. smiling.

In total the students donated 380 brand new pens, 39 packs of notebook paper, and 30 boxes of tissue paper.  It was a much needed supply drop for the school.

“We cannot thank the students enough for helping,” says Winfree Academy Richardson Principal Madge Ennis, “This time of year we begin running very low on our school supplies.  Especially with cold/flu season, we really needed the tissues!”

St. Anthony School will be holding an Exhibition on Thursday, February 20, 2014 showcasing all of the students’ service learning projects, including the 5th grade donation to Winfree Academy Charter Schools. The community is invited to see all of the great projects from these talented students.  For more information about the Exhibition, contact St. Anthony School at (214) 421-3645.
