TEXAS: KIPP DFW’s expansion plans get $2 million boost

KIPPKIPP DFW’s expansion plans got a big boost this week when the Jenesis Group announced the local charter school network won a $2 million grant. It’s the single largest award in KIPP DFW’s history and will go a long way in helping the tuition-free model grow to 10 campuses by 2021.

“We are excited about our new partnership with Jenesis and the opportunities it presents,” KIPP DFW executive director Quinton Vance said in a statement. “We hope to capitalize on the momentum of this investment to mobilize and engage the philanthropic community’s participation in growing our impact in southern Dallas.”

KIPP DFW is part of the national Knowledge is Power Program and opened its flagship charter school, KIPP Truth Academy, in 2003. In August 2013, the charter school network opened KIPP Destiny, its first elementary campus in southern Dallas. All KIPP schools provide a free, college-preparatory education through open enrollment.

“KIPP has a proven model for delivering quality education to underserved communities,” said Kim Turner of Jenesis. “We saw an opportunity to catalyze the growth of one of the country’s leading charter school networks here in DFW.”

KIPP’s bold plan for Dallas-Fort Worth education includes growing to 10 campuses and 5,000 students across North Texas. The estimated cost for the expansion is $26 million.
