Selected readings on US charter schools
The state’s charter school office received 71 applications to open new charter schools in 2015. The applications will be vetted by a charter advisory committee, and its recommendations will be passed on to the State Board of Education for a vote.
There’s continuing interest in charters in Mecklenburg County. The 19 applications from Mecklenburg account for nearly 25 percent of the submissions. The charter school office received seven applications from Durham and seven from Wake. Two applicants want to start virtual charter schools.
The Lee Scholars Academy, which had been approved for Chapel Hill but never opened, is now listed with a Durham location.
Charter schools have grown significantly since the state legislature voted in 2011 to eliminate the 100-school cap on charters. The state has 127 charters operating. Another 26 that would open in 2014 are up for approval by the State Board in January.
