Selected readings on US charter schools
On August 28, 2013, The Los Angeles Times’ editorial about the charter movement, Making Room for Charter Students, stated that allocating space for charter students under Prop. 39 should not be at the expense of students in traditional public schools. CCSA wrote the following letter to the editor in response:
The editorial Making Room for Charter Students does a grave injustice to ALL public school students. The way to facility adequacy is to ensure that ALL public school students are treated equitably.
It is irresponsible to suggest that Proposition 39, passed by voters with the support of major public education partners, be amended to exclude one group of students.
Furthermore, suggesting that facilities be allocated to only some students and leftovers be provided to charter students is incomprehensible. An accurate accounting of LAUSD facilities could guarantee that ALL students attend a safe, high quality educational facility. With parents’ growing choice of charter schools, it is time that these public school students stop being relegated to second class citizen status.
