LOUISIANA: Rex foundation to award $525,000 in grants for New Orleans charter schools

foundation-donationAs part of its continuing commitment to the New Orleans charter school movement, a foundation financed by members of the Rex organization on Saturday will award 31 grants totaling more than $525,000 to charter schools and organizations that support them.

The presentation, along with a salute to Teach for America, will be held at 11 a.m. during a reception at the Rex den, Rex spokesman King Logan said.

The money comes from the Pro Bono Publico Foundation, which the Rex organization founded after Hurricane Katrina to support New Orleans’ recovery. Its focus is on charter schools.

So far, Logan said, the foundation has given out about $1.6 million.

In addition to the grants, the foundation will salute Teach for America, which has placed about 500 of its teachers in New Orleans schools, Logan said.

This marks the second year in which foundation grants top a half-million dollars, he said. Last year’s total was about $545,000.
